Vinyl banners and mesh banners are two of the most common large-format outdoor (and indoor) advertising tools. Both are printed on durable PVC-based materials, but they perform very differently in wind and weather.

Vinyl Banners (Solid / Scrim Vinyl)

Solid vinyl banners (typically 13 oz or 18 oz scrim vinyl) have a continuous, non-porous surface.

Strengths

• Excellent print quality — sharp details, rich colors, and high opacity

• Waterproof and highly durable in rain and sun

• Good for both indoor and outdoor use when wind is moderate

• More affordable for most sizes

Best uses

• Storefront and wall-mounted signs

• Trade shows, events, and indoor displays

• Grand openings, sales promotions, and temporary outdoor advertising in lower-wind locations

• Stage backdrops and step-and-repeat banners

• Roadside or building signs with solid mounting

Limitation: In strong or sustained wind, solid vinyl acts like a sail. This puts heavy stress on grommets, poles, and mounting hardware and can cause tearing or failure.

Mesh Banners (Perforated / Wind-Resistant)

Mesh banners are made from perforated vinyl (commonly ~8 oz) with thousands of tiny holes that allow air to pass through (often around 30–40% open area).

Strengths

• Superior wind resistance — dramatically reduces wind load

• Lighter weight and easier to handle in large sizes

• Excellent for fences, scaffolding, and open outdoor locations

• Good drainage (water passes through instead of pooling)

• Still readable and effective from normal viewing distances

Best uses

• Construction site and fence wraps

• Sports fields, stadiums, and ballpark fencing

• Building wraps and large outdoor installations

• Coastal or high-wind areas (very relevant in Florida)

• Any location where sustained wind is expected

Trade-off: Slightly softer print quality and lower opacity compared with solid vinyl (background can show through a bit when backlit or viewed up close). High-contrast designs work best.
