Formboard (more commonly called foam board or foam core) is a lightweight, rigid display material made of a polystyrene foam core sandwiched between two paper or plastic facers. It is one of the most popular and affordable substrates for short- to medium-term indoor advertising and displays.


Key characteristics

  • Very lightweight and easy to handle

  • Smooth surface that accepts digital printing, mounting of prints, or vinyl graphics

  • Rigid enough to stand on easels or be mounted on walls

  • Inexpensive compared with PVC, acrylic, or Maxmetal

  • Easy to cut with a utility knife or CNC

Common thicknesses: 3/16″ (≈5 mm) and 1/2″ (≈13 mm)

Best uses for advertising & displays

  • Indoor posters and mounted graphics

  • Trade show and event signage

  • Point-of-sale (POS) and countertop displays

  • Temporary presentations and lobby signs

  • Real estate open-house boards (indoor use)

Advantages

  • Low cost

  • Lightweight (easy to transport and hang)

  • Clean, professional appearance when printed or mounted well

  • Quick turnaround — ideal for last-minute needs

  • Can be printed directly (UV flatbed) or have graphics mounted to it

Limitations

  • Not suitable for outdoor use — the paper facers absorb moisture, causing warping, bubbling, or delamination in rain or high humidity

  • Edges can crush or dent if handled roughly

  • Less durable than PVC, Coroplast, acrylic, or Maxmetal

  • Limited lifespan even indoors if heavily handled
